Before cold-emailing me, please check if your question is answered in the FAQ below. I receive a lot of emails, so unfortunately I canāt reply individually to every message.
Note: All faculty and staff at CU Boulder are mandatory reporters. This means that if I learn about something that might be sex discrimination (e.g., sexual harassment, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, stalking, pregnancy discrimination, LGBTQ discrimination), then I must report what I know to the Title IX Office. Usually, reports will only leave a record of concern, but sometimes, a report can be escalated into an investigation without a victimās consent. Mandatory reporters are expected to share information learned in all settings, including during class activities, assignments, office hours, and outside of class. Please be thoughtful about what you disclose to me.

Yes, Iām recruiting 1-2 PhD students in Computer Science at CU Boulder to start in Fall 2025.
Iām looking for students with experience in (1) natural language processing, (2) software engineering or data science, and (3) academic research. My work is interdisciplinary, and I appreciate when students have experience in areas outside of computer science. I also value time spent in industry and/or pursuing other interests outside of academia. Students with non-traditional backgrounds are very welcome to apply.
You need to apply to the CS PhD program at CU Boulder and list me as a potential advisor in the application form. I can also advise and co-advise students in Information Science. Optionally, you can also fill out this form to indicate your interest; but note that you must also apply through the official CU Boulder system.
There is no need to email me, and due to the volume of messages, I will probably not reply. If you have a specific connection or question, then feel free to reach out.

Check out my blog post on this topic. Iāve tried to make this a comprehensive guide to the PhD application process and what itās like to study at Cornell Information Science (which is where I did my PhD). You might also like to consult this huge list of resources.
I donāt currently have any paid RA positions for undergrad or masterās students. If youāre still interested, please fill out this form.
